چکیده

A 24-year-old male firefighter fell while carrying a victim away from a fire. He complained of neck pain. In the emergency room a lateral cervical spine film (fig. 1 A) showed a large ossific fragment slightly posterior and inferior to the posterior arch of the atlas . Incidence and Variants of Posterior Arch Defects of the Atlas Vertebra

In order to describe the incidence and existing variants of congenital anomalies of the atlas vertebrae in a Caucasian population, we examined 1069 CT scans of the upper cervical spine. We found 41 cases with altered atlas vertebrae, representing 3.8% of all analyzed patients. With 83% of all found anomalies, the predominant type is characterized by a small dorsal cleft (3.2% of all patients). ...

Congenital hypoplasia of the posterior arch of the atlas: case report and extensive review of the literature.

Congenital hypoplasia of the posterior arch of the atlas (C1), a developmental failure of chondrogenesis, is a rare anomaly and may range from partial clefts to total agenesis of the posterior arch. Ossification of the posterior arch usually occurs between the 3rd and 5th years of life. The incidence of posterior arch anomalies of the atlas is between 0.69% and 2.95%. For the evaluation of the ...

Abnormal spicules on the inferior aspect of anterior arch of atlas vertebra.

Anterior arch of the atlas vertebra is known to exhibit various developmental anomalies. Bony outgrowths, osteophytes, clefts and aplasia of the anterior and posterior arches of the atlas have received special attention by research workers. To the best of our knowledge, not many osteological studies have defined the spicules on the anterior arch of the atlas. The present study describes an abno...

Median deficiency in the posterior arch of the atlas vertebra : a case report

It seems to be a principle in morphology that the greater the amount of specialization of function manifested by any organ, the farther does the structure so specialized depart from the form of the primordial type to which it belongs. This principle is particularly exemplified in the case of the two upper cervical vertebrae, the atlas and the axis, as, on account of the special varieties of mot...

Anomalies of the craniovertebral junction – a very rare case report

A very rare case of anomalies of the craniovertebral junction (CVJ) is reported owing to its clinical significance and rarity. MRI and CT scan studies of the CVJ of a 52-year-old female patient revealed a hypoplastic clivus, an occipital vertebra, partial occipitalization of the atlas and atlas posterior rachischisis. The presence of an occipital vertebra and occipitalization of the atlas in th...
